I just wanted to post an update on my project idea. I am going to focus on a career project for my 8th grade students. I currently have my students work on career PowerPoint presentations and present them to the class. In the past I have had students learn about and work on creating resumes and occasionally I have discussed the importance of interview skills. I want to combine these activities, and possibly a few more, to create one large career project.
We will spend time in class learning about researching careers, creating resumes, and interview skills. Students will then be given a career (or they may be allowed to choose their own) and they research and find answers to questions about that career to create a PowerPoint presentation to show to the class. The students will use the skills they learned about resumes to design a resume for a job in that given career field. They will then use the information they learned about interview skills and participate in a mock interview for that job. All parts of the project will be evaluated by rubrics, none of which have been created yet.
I'm not really sure about all of the details, but hopefully they will be worked out soon. Let me know if you have any suggestions to help make this a more educational, entertaining, and technological project for my students.

That sounds like a great project, and one that is really connected to the real world! Great ideas!!
ReplyDeleteCould you have students make a video of some sort? That seems to catch students' interests in my experience. Maybe talking about "a day in the life of..." their career? Just a thought! But your ideas here sound great!!
I agree... it's so important for students to start thinking about their careers and what interest them early on. One idea I have is maybe finding a career/interest survey that the students can take to find a career that they will be interested. I don't know what's available out there, but what we use at the high school is called Kuder software (www.kuder.com). It's pretty cool in that it ranks general career fields on what fits their interests, then they can click and see specific careers in that field.
ReplyDeleteSounds like a great project!
Ironically, I just finished a lesson that the students had to research a career. I used a web quest activity that included personal budgets etc.. But the link was really cool for researching careers.. The students really enjoyed it.. let me know if you want it.. It's on my work ocmputer
ReplyDeleteGreat idea, Richard! I think that those skills you mentioned are going to be very valuable to your students, especially at this age. I think that Sarah's idea to incorporate video is a great idea. I've been on a video kick this semester, but I think that having the students make videos of mock interviews, or even "what to do vs. what not to do during an interview" videos, would be not only entertaining but very informative. Maybe the girls could do a "What Not to Wear" type of video for people in the workforce...you would think that would be common knowledge but I'm continually surprised at what some teachers consider to be work appropriate. Just a few ideas!
ReplyDeleteAfter your students being an interviewee, they might try being an interviewer, and see how a different perspective they can see themselves into. It would be crucial they look professional ;)
ReplyDeleteRole playing has a great impact on behavior modification. Let us know how it goes!
